Spotlight on Activism
In recognition of our members' hard work to protect animals,
DDAL periodically profiles an outstanding activist in our online
Spotlight on Activism.
Anne
Russek has loved horses since she was 3-years old and has worked
with them since she was 12. Today she has a farm with eight
horses on 30 acres in western Virginia and works tirelessly
as an activist for the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act
(AHSPA), which will end the transport of horses to slaughter
for human consumption. “I had read an article about the
bill written by Liz Ross of DDAL, and after speaking to her
on the phone, I was convinced that my lifetime knowledge of
horses, could in some capacity, help towards the passage of
this bill,” said Anne.
Anne’s activism has taken many forms. In addition to
sending letters and petitions to her legislators, she promotes
the bill on local radio stations and at community events, regularly
attends meetings held by her U.S. representative, has had several
letters to the editor published, has distributed information
at horse shows and a high profile polo match, and has even organized
a float for a local Labor Day parade. She works hard to increase
public awareness and keep the issue in the public eye. “Public
support is very important and also very motivating, Anne explains.
“I realize that if I do not continue to be a constant
reminder to them of the status of the bill, they may not follow
it as closely.
”In spite of feeling frustrated occasionally when working
to rally support for the bill, Anne continues to stay focused
and motivated. “Horses are part of my identity,"
she says. “I never tire working with them and I would
never consider not using my human talents to protect
them from abuse.”
Thanks to Anne and all our activists for their efforts to help
animals!
