Press Coverage of DDAL Lawsuit Against USDA
The Doris Day Animal League, with a coalition of animal protection
groups and citizens who live near horse slaughter plants, filed
suit on February 14, 2006 in federal court to block the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) from carrying out a plan to
allow the slaughter of American horses for human consumption
in Europe and Asia. The USDA plan subverts a recent federal
law that was written to halt horse slaughter. On March 14, 2006
the U.S. District Court in Washington DC rejected DDAL's request.
Below is a selection of the press coverage on this issue.
"Federal
court denies injunction to suspend operations at slaughter plants"
from The Thoroughbred Times, 3/15/06.
Excerpt: "The ultimate prize is passing the American Horse
Slaughter Prevention Act," Liz Ross, Director of Special
Projects, said. "That's the remedy and we've known that
all along. If there is a silver lining to yesterday's court
decision, it shows Congress that it needs to act now to pass
the permanent ban."
