American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act
Status: Active
Summary: (S. 311 & H.R. 503) To prohibit the slaughter
of horses for human consumption and the trade and transport
of horseflesh and live horses intended for human consumption.
Sponsors: Sens. John Ensign (R-NV) and Mary
Landrieu (D-LA) and Reps. Janice Schakowsky (D-IL), Ed Whitfield
(R-KY), John Spratt (D-SC) and Nick Rahall (D-WV).

Dog and Cat Fur Prohibition Enforcement Act
Status: Active
Summary: (H.R. 891) It is already illegal to
import, export, sell or advertise any domestic dog fur in the
U.S. Fur from other animals must be identified with a label,
but only if the value of the fur exceeds $150. The Dog and Cat
Fur Prohibition Enforcement Act will strengthen the current
law and protect consumers and animals by outlawing the import
of fur from raccoon dogs and requiring all garments trimmed
with fur to be labeled, regardless of value.

Wild Horses and Burros
Status: Active
Summary: (H.R. 249) Restores the prohibition
on the commercial sale and slaughter of wild free-roaming horses
and burros. This provision was stripped by an amendment slipped
into the 2005 Omnibus Spending Bill.

Downed Animal and Food Safety Protection Act
Status: Active
Summary: (S. 364 & H.R. 661) To end the
use of nonambulatory livestock - animals too sick or injured
to stand or walk on their own - in human food and require that
these "downed" animals be humanely euthanized when
presented at slaughter facilities.
Sponsors: Senator Daniel Akaka (D-HI) and
Representatives Gary Ackerman (D-NY) and Steven LaTourette (R-OH).
